Daily Bread: A Comprehensive Unit Study Guide

Daily Bread

Daily Bread is a guide designed to give you the confidence and resources you need to teach your child from first grade through twelfth grade using Bible-based unit studies. The system is based on a four-year rotation, which you will complete three times, if you use it for your child’s entire school “career.” This allows you to focus on a different learning stage each time, and takes the pressure off of you to have to cover every detail the first time – if you overlook something the first time, you can catch it the next time through. During each four-year rotation, you and your student(s) will read through the entire (Protestant) Bible, in roughly chronological order.

Daily Bread provides you with a wide range of resources. It begins with an introduction and tips for using the book. The introduction is followed by instruction in one method for structuring unit studies. (This will be especially helpful for those of you who have never used unit studies before, or are unsure of your ability to teach this way.) Next is a simple overview of the four-year plan, listing only the weeks with their Scripture passages and associated units, and an in-depth overview, which breaks down each week’s studies. Next there are unit-by-unit lists of resource recommendations which, depending on the unit, may include primary sources, fiction, nonfiction, biographies, multimedia/miscellaneous resources, vocabulary, relevant Scripture references, art, music, websites, and occasional search-engine warnings (words to look out for when doing internet searches!). The next section provides overviews of music and art history, with representative lists of musicians/artists, Greek and Latin roots, American Presidents, and suggested overall (non-unit-specific) resources. The final section consists of 36 pages of reproducibles in a number of categories, including an easy recordkeeping form designed especially for unit studies. A table of contents and simple index are both included.

What Daily Bread is not:

Daily Bread is not a day-by-day curriculum, with lesson plans laid out. The Scripture reading is broken down by day, to simplify things for you. Other assignments are not specified. (The instructional material at the beginning of the book will help you with this part.) If you are looking for a Bible-based unit study program which does have specific assignments laid out for you, you might want to check out Student of the Word.

Language Arts at Home: The Homeschooler’s Guide to Teaching English Grammar, Composition, and Literature Appreciation

Why Language Arts at Home?

When I began looking into curriculum, looking for the “perfect English course,” I came across KISS Grammar, designed by Dr. Edward Vavra. KISS Grammar does a wonderful job of covering sentence structure in a very logical, methodical, and thorough manner. I was a little bit disappointed, though, to discover that it does not address composition, most punctuation, literature, etc. In other words, what it does, it does excellently, but it doesn’t do everything I needed. With that in mind, I set out to design a course of study – basically a scope and sequence – which started with the KISS Grammar timeline, but plugged the other topics in around it. What is presented here as Language Arts at Home is that scope and sequence, expanded to include essential information – such as definitions – because the average parent is not thoroughly familiar with many of these topics.

So What’s the Purpose of the Book and What Do I Get?

This guide to English grammar, composition, literature appreciation, and library skills is designed to provide you, as a homeschooling parent, with the structure and resources you need to confidently teach your child language arts – without ever needing to purchase a textbook. Starting with the framework of KISS Grammar, it fleshes out a full English course of study, providing a year-by-year list of topics to cover and the basic knowledge you need to cover them. It intentionally does *not* include assignments, enabling you to teach your child using the texts he’s already using for his other subjects. (For more specific information, see below.)

Refining Rubies: A Study of Biblical Womanhood for Young Ladies

I believe it is important to teach our young ladies what the Bible has to say about being a godly woman, wife, and mother before they are put into situations which require them to utilize that information in their decisions. That is the purpose of this Bible study guide, which is designed to be used with middle school girls. (If you are from a very conservative background, you may want to wait until high school age.) It is based predominately on Titus 2:4-5 and touches on a number of topics critical to biblical womanhood. I have tried very hard to honor the authority of the parents in writing this book. For this reason, some of the touchier topics are introduced simply as questions in the appropriate sections so that the girls can discuss them with their parents. Those topics on which most biblically-conservative Christians agree I have taught in a more straightforward manner.

The content of the free download is exactly the same as the print version, so you can use it as a preview if you aren’t sure about ordering. Your feedback is welcome, as well.

If you are considering using this as a group study, you may want to incorporate practical skills into your meetings as well. I would recommend having the girls read the chapter the week prior to your meeting, so they can discuss it with their parents first and parents can make arrangements if there is anything they aren’t comfortable with. Then when you come together for your meeting, you can spend a few minutes discussing the chapter and spend the rest of the time working on a practical skill.

Washer/Dryer Magnet

Have you ever shrunk a favorite sweater (or other garment) by tossing it in the dryer, when it should have been line-dried? Help prevent that by reminding yourself – and other family members – that something in a given load of laundry cannot be machine-dried. Simply place this magnet on the washer door for a visual reminder when you remove the clothing.

(This is one of my favorite products; I use mine regularly!)

Homemaker’s Helper

Are you looking for a planner designed with you – a homemaker and/or homeschool mom – in mind? Would you like a planner with more flexibility than what’s currently on the market? Are you tired of throwing away half of the fillers from planner “packages” because they just aren’t what you need? Homemaker’s Helper is for you! This CD-ROM contains a set of over 100 planner pages, in both 8.5″xll” and 5.5″x8x5″ sizes, designed to be printed from your computer. They are done in greyscale, with as little shading as possible, to conserve your ink. These pages are available in .pdf, .doc, and .rtf formats so you can use them as-is or modify them to better suit you. Homemaker’s Helper…the only planner you’ll ever need!

This product is drop-shipped from the (print-on-demand) printer. Please allow up to 7 days for printing, plus shipping time.

Buy CD-ROM ($14.95) or spiral-bound ($19.95)

Format :

Note: I do not generally recommend the spiral-bound version. There is no actual table of contents (just a listing of pages), as that would require printing page numbers on each form, which would spoil the forms. The CD-ROM is very easy to navigate (and less expensive, to boot!). The print version was made available by request, however, for those who either do not have computers or who have great difficulty using them.

Maidservant Kit

The Maidservant Kit consists of a full-color booklet describing the process, step-by-step, of compiling a household notebook, as well as preprinted divider pages and the accompanying adhesive tabs. The dividers are of a vintage style, and a few examples may be seen below. A Gardening divider and an Interior Decorating divider are available as add-ons.

A few of the divider pages:

in reality, the same as the other three. It just didn’t scan as well.)
