Daily Bread

Daily Bread

Daily Bread is a guide designed to give you the confidence and resources you need to teach your child from first grade through twelfth grade using Bible-based unit studies. The system is based on a four-year rotation, which you will complete three times, if you use it for your child's entire school "career." This allows you to focus on a different learning stage each time, and takes the pressure off of you to have to cover every detail the first time - if you overlook something the first time, you can catch it the next time through. During each four-year rotation, you and your student(s) will read through the entire (Protestant) Bible, in roughly chronological order.

Daily Bread provides you with a wide range of resources. It begins with an introduction and tips for using the book. The introduction is followed by instruction in one method for structuring unit studies. (This will be especially helpful for those of you who have never used unit studies before, or are unsure of your ability to teach this way.) Next is a simple overview of the four-year plan, listing only the weeks with their Scripture passages and associated units, and an in-depth overview, which breaks down each week's studies. Next there are unit-by-unit lists of resource recommendations which, depending on the unit, may include primary sources, fiction, nonfiction, biographies, multimedia/miscellaneous resources, vocabulary, relevant Scripture references, art, music, websites, and occasional search-engine warnings (words to look out for when doing internet searches!). The next section provides overviews of music and art history, with representative lists of musicians/artists, Greek and Latin roots, American Presidents, and suggested overall (non-unit-specific) resources. The final section consists of 36 pages of reproducibles in a number of categories, including an easy recordkeeping form designed especially for unit studies. A table of contents and simple index are both included.

What Daily Bread is not:

Daily Bread is not a day-by-day curriculum, with lesson plans laid out. The Scripture reading is broken down by day, to simplify things for you. Other assignments are not specified. (The instructional material at the beginning of the book will help you with this part.) If you are looking for a Bible-based unit study program which does have specific assignments laid out for you, you might want to check out Student of the Word.
