![]() Language Arts at Home: The Homeschooler's Guide to Teaching English Grammar, Composition, and Literature AppreciationWhy Language Arts at Home? When I began looking into curriculum, looking for the "perfect English course," I came across KISS Grammar, designed by Dr. Edward Vavra. KISS Grammar does a wonderful job of covering sentence structure in a very logical, methodical, and thorough manner. I was a little bit disappointed, though, to discover that it does not address composition, most punctuation, literature, etc. In other words, what it does, it does excellently, but it doesn't do everything I needed. With that in mind, I set out to design a course of study - basically a scope and sequence - which started with the KISS Grammar timeline, but plugged the other topics in around it. What is presented here as Language Arts at Home is that scope and sequence, expanded to include essential information - such as definitions - because the average parent is not thoroughly familiar with many of these topics. So What's the Purpose of the Book and What Do I Get? This guide to English grammar, composition, literature appreciation, and library skills is designed to provide you, as a homeschooling parent, with the structure and resources you need to confidently teach your child language arts - without ever needing to purchase a textbook. Starting with the framework of KISS Grammar, it fleshes out a full English course of study, providing a year-by-year list of topics to cover and the basic knowledge you need to cover them. It intentionally does *not* include assignments, enabling you to teach your child using the texts he's already using for his other subjects. (For more specific information, see below.)
